How do organizations, with support from the City of San José, help residents during these times when food insecurity is at its highest.

“You have to put in the work!” said Sharon Jackson, Executive Director of Mama D 2nd Chance Community Outreach (MD2C).

MD2C’s mission and purpose is to provide up to 100 at-risk youth ages 14-18, in Santa Clara County, with educational tutoring in math, science, and test preparation tutorials to ensure their graduation from high school and preparation to enter college successfully.

But most of all, Mama D Second Chance supplies food to low income, seniors, and residents affected from Covid-19 through their outreach program.

According to Jackson, “With the funding from San José’s Collective Impact Grants, our organization will be able to purchase necessary supplies for our food distribution. We will be able to double the average meals provided from 50 a day to 100 a day.”

Since 2011, Mama D 2nd Chance has prepared and delivered meals to local homeless encampments, and seniors with the help of their local at-risk youth program volunteers.

“Using youth volunteers to assist in packaging and delivering meals,” Jackson shares, “our volunteers gain empathy and learn to bless others when they need it the most.”

This small non-profit helps San José with local deliveries from certified kitchens in the area. MD2C ensures safety protocols with all volunteers and residents receiving necessities. Working with Berryessa Health and Wellness, the organization learned and implemented health and safety guidelines for MD2C. From wearing masks, to social distancing, to temperature checks, Mama D 2nd Chance also provides a face mask to anyone receiving meals or necessities.

Serving San José residents three times a week, they have also developed a strict schedule for pick-ups and deliveries to assist in the safety of the staff and participants.

Thanks to the generosity of financial donors and grants, CBO non-profits like Mama D 2nd Chance are assisting vulnerable residents when they need it most, contributing to serve the community with their services.
