When Governor Gavin Newsome launched the Great Plates Delivered (GPD) program in May, it was a necessary step towards providing meals for California seniors sheltering safely at home.

Since that time, GPD has been extended on a monthly basis, yet for many GPD participants – last-day extension announcements has caused many recipients to be on the edge of their seats.

Though GPD has been extended monthly, the new extension announcement guarantees the statewide meal delivery program will continue through January 9, 2021. 

GPD’s collaboration with World Central Kitchen (WCK), Sourcewise, and the City of San José has resulted in over 237,116 meals provided to eligible seniors, 65 and older, since May 2020.

GPD supplements the “Silicon Valley Strong” coalition of school districts, neighboring cities, faith and community-based organizations, serving over two million meals per week to those affected by the economic impacts of sheltering in place.

WCK’s collaboration with participating restaurants were the first steps to sparking restaurant recovery, bolstering food distribution efforts, and most importantly, feeding homebound seniors.

According to data from the City of San José, GPD served over 7,000 meals to seniors last week, with all of the meals coming from local eateries and restaurants– a win-win for participating businesses, including those in San José, and seniors.
