“Through volunteering, I have not only been able to network with fellow students during a time of remote learning, but I have also been given the opportunity to give back to my community in a time of dire need,” said Valerie Brunt, San José State student and community volunteer.
There has never been a better time for college students and campus-organized groups to volunteer in the community.
San José State University, along with many other schools and colleges across California, has transitioned into online remote learning to comply with social distancing regulations and refrain from large gatherings on campus. While this change is necessary to ensure the safety of all students and staff, it can be isolating.
Volunteering on campus or in the community is an incredible way for students to connect with others while still adhering to COVID-19 safety measures.
Brunt spent time volunteering for the African American Community Services Agency, whose center is located just a few blocks from the San José State University Campus. Her volunteer duties included packaging brown bag lunches for the center, as well as sanitation items like tissues and toothbrushes, and distributing these items to community members in need.
“It was compelling to see something as small as a bagged lunch have such an immense impact to a person in need,” Brunt added. “It made me excited to help members of my community in a positive way.”
Brunt, a public relations senior, exemplifies how volunteering for a few hours after class or over the weekend can make the ultimate difference to people in the community who do not have access to food or necessities.
For those college students who want to help their community and make an impact, there are countless ways for students to provide aid to individuals in need.
SJSU’s Spartan Food Pantry is a full-service, food assistance program and an incredible volunteer opportunity.
In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, Spartan Food Pantry provides fresh produce, non-perishable items, and refrigerated foods to SJSU enrolled students currently facing food insecurity.
Not only does this program benefit SJSU students fighting hunger, but the student volunteers as well. Through volunteer efforts, students are able to develop leadership, accountability, and problem-solving skills, and are given the opportunity to showcase these skills outside of a classroom setting.

Santa Clara County food banks and nonprofit organizations have supported the community during a year of unprecedented circumstances, but the work does not stop there. Volunteer efforts are still needed in 2021.
College students, who are in good health, are encouraged to volunteer their time to local organizations helping aid residents facing food insecurity.
