Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department’s Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) has been a vital resource, providing meals to a vulnerable population and serving approximately 460,000 meals since March 2020, according to data from the City of San José’s Food Distribution Dashboard.

SNP Mayfair Volunteers

San Jose community centers provide volunteers with the space needed to administer these crucial meals to SNP participants. 14 community center locations across San José serve as SNP distribution sites, offering to-go meals to adults, age 60+, through a drive-up service.

A $3 contribution is suggested for seniors 60+, however, no senior will be denied a meal based on his or her inability to provide a contribution. There is an $8 guest fee per meal for guests under 60 years old.

SNP volunteers understand the importance of adhering to COVID-19 safety regulations, delivering to-go meals to each vehicle so participants can stay in the safety of their own car. Masks are required for volunteers and participants during meal service hours.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our community in countless ways, and many seniors, for the first time, have experienced food insecurity as a result. San José community centers and involved volunteers have proved that they are #siliconvalleystrongheroes by providing meals to seniors who have lost access to food resources.

SNP Drive Thru

The SNP has experienced an increase in popularity over the past few months. The City of San José and participating community centers are working to make SNP participants aware of all participating locations, so that every senior resident in need can access food.
