San José Clean Energy Launches City-wide Electricity Service February 1

Post Date:02/05/2019 11:23 AM
Over the next month, over 308,000 residential and commercial customers will be enrolled in San José Clean Energy (SJCE), receiving cheaper and cleaner electricity. If you live in San José, this means you, too!

Operated by the newly-formed Community Energy Department, SJCE is the City’s Community Choice Energy program. Through Community Choice, local governments like the City of San José buy electricity from cleaner sources, while the investor-owned utility (PG&E, for San José) continues to distribute the electricity, maintain the powerlines, respond to power outages, and provide billing.

SJCE is one of 19 Community Choice Energy programs now in operation in California, and one of eight in the Bay Area. These programs have collectively saved customers millions of dollars and cut greenhouse gas emissions drastically since 2010.

Customers will be enrolled in GreenSource, SJCE’s default power service, and no action is required to start receiving service. GreenSource includes 45% renewable energy from solar, wind, geothermal, and 35% carbon-free hydropower, and is 80% carbon-free overall.

“Our cleaner energy this year is the same as taking 35,000 cars off the road or planting 2.7 million trees,” said Lori Mitchell, Community Energy Department Director. “And our 1% rate discount adds up to $2 million in savings across our community each year. Together we’re having a great impact and helping preserve our planet for future generations.”
SJCE was unanimously approved by the City Council in May of 2017 after years of study and community outreach. SJCE is governed by the City Council and has a Community Advisory Council. It launched service to municipal accounts in September 2018 and has since saved the City over $10,000 per month in electricity costs.

SJCE is proud to support the Climate Smart San José goal of providing 100% renewable energy to San José by 2050.

To further reduce their carbon footprint, customers can upgrade to TotalGreen, SJCE’s 100% renewable energy service. Selecting TotalGreen will cost the average home $5-10 more per month over GreenSource service.

In addition to the environmental benefits of renewable energy, the local economy benefits from our community energy program as revenues generated by SJCE will be reinvested back into the community through lower rates and energy programs that customers want.
