#SILICONVALLEYSTRONGHEROES 85% of San José Population has Received at Least One Dose
San José is First Major City in the US to Reach this Threshold but More is Needed
The City of San José has reached a milestone in its battle against COVID-19. San José is the first of the ten largest cities in the United States to reach an 85% vaccination rate for first doses. This week’s #SiliconValleyStrongHeroes are those residents that contributed to that number to help make our community safer.
"I really attribute our success to two sources," said Mayor Sam Liccardo to multiple sources. "One is a county public health department that has been really hustling hard with a lot of non-profit partners in the city to really reach every corner of our community. Secondly, we have a community that really understands the importance of following public health guidance, getting vaccinated, following the science and we're blessed to live in a community like this one. As a result of that, we're all able to stay safer."
In Santa Clara County, 75% of eligible residents in Santa Clara County are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to go along with the 85% of residents ages 12 and over that are fully vaccinated or have received the initial dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in San José.
While the City’s goal of having 85% of its residents fully vaccinated by August 1, is within reach, we are not quite there yet. In fact, our residents ages 12-17 have the lowest vaccination rate in the county at only 57.8% receiving at least one dose.
"Having a full two doses of vaccinations is critical to enable us individually to protect ourselves and also to protect our whole community," noted Liccardo.
The county’s public health department has spent the last year partnering with non-profit partners to provide the city with vaccinations and to specifically reach our underrepresented and underage individuals.
Thankfully, we have a #SVStrong community that understands the importance of following public health guidance and doing the work to ensure safety for everyone.

Individuals 12-17 must have a signed consent form with written permissions from a parent or guardian to receive a vaccine.
