#SILICONVALLEYSTRONGHEROES Second Harvest of Silicon Valley Helped Increase Availability of Youth Summer Meals
Did you know that summer meals are funded by the federal government and can be provided to anyone 18 and under?
Normally, these meals can only be served in areas that typically have free-and-reduced-price meals of 50% or greater. However, with Covid waivers, they can be served anywhere there is a need.
And this past year has shown there is a need in Silicon Valley. This summer, there were 160 meal sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, with 99 of the sites in San José.
Fortunately, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley (SHSV) is one of our #SiliconValleyStrongHeroes. They have helped identify sites and partners those sites with sponsors and meal providers to bring an important need to our community.
In San José, schools, especially East Side Union and San Jose Unified have been instrumental in the summer meal program’s success as “sponsors/meal providers”. Additionally, the YMCA is supporting youth meals at certain San Jose libraries, further expanding the reach into more areas of the community.
This summer, there were 99 school sites in San José providing meals to our youth.
Thanks to SHSV coordination, infrastructure support of the sponsor/meal providers and the promotion of the locations, free youth meals could be provided to those who needed them this summer.
Ensuring children have access to nutritious meals and snacks when school is not in session is important to a community’s health and our #SiliconValleyStrongHeroes Second Harvest of Silicon Valley was instrumental in ensuring free, healthy meals and snacks were available to our youth.
