Mayor Sam Liccardo’s Statement on Court Ruling to Support City of San José’s Lawsuit against Trump Administration on Census Citizenship Question

Post Date:03/06/2019

San Jose, Calif. – Today, a U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California ruled to support the City of San José’s lawsuit against the Trump Administration for their attempt to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census. The Judge ruled that the Administration’s attempt to add the citizenship question is unconstitutional, and a violation of administrative law. As such, the Judge ordered the administration to remove the citizenship question from the 2020 census. Below, please find Mayor Liccardo’s statement:

“Today, the courts reaffirmed our promise that in San José, everyone counts,” said Mayor Liccardo. “By rejecting the Trump Administration’s attempt to stoke fear and depress participation in the 2020 Census, this decision helps protect critical funding for the essential services – such as healthcare, housing, and education – upon which all our residents depend.”
