San José Mayor’s Statement on the Trump Administration’s Rumored Push to “Crack Down” on California Homeless Encampments

Post Date:09/10/2019

San José, Calif. – This week, the Trump Administration indicated it intended to pursue actions to “crack down” on California’s homelessness crisis. In response, Sam Liccardo – the Mayor of the Bay Area’s largest, and California’s 3rd-largest city – issued the following statement:

“Homelessness is not a partisan issue, and we shouldn’t make it one. Both Democrats and Republicans are dying on our streets. I welcome any federal investment in solutions that work: first and foremost, more housing, along with mental health treatment, drug treatment, and job training. The federal government can and should partner in tackling this challenge, but it requires a serious effort—this isn’t a problem that the President can redirect with a Sharpie.”
