SAN JOSE, Calif. (December 18, 2019) – The Center for Digital Government has recognized the City of San José as one of the nation’s leading local government municipalities in their annual Digital Cities Survey. Now in its 19TH year, the annual survey recognizes cities using technology to tackle social challenges, enhance services, strengthen cybersecurity, and more. The City of San José placed second in the “500,000 or More” population category.

“With the leanest staff of any major U.S. city, San José relies on innovation to better serve our most vulnerable communities, improve public safety, and boost the impact of our scarce resources,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo. “We’re grateful to the Center for Digital Government for recognizing our team’s tremendous efforts, as we work to create a national model of governance that leverages data and new technologies to improve the lives of those we serve.”

This distinction recognizes numerous civic innovation programs implemented by City departments and the Mayor’s Office of Technology & Innovation (MOTI). The initiatives represent Mayor Liccardo’s Smart City Vision aiming to make San José the most innovative city in the country by 2020. The Smart City Vision is defined by a series of core values and goals that influence the transformative, user-centric technology being developed for the benefit of our communities. 2019 is the third consecutive year San José has placed in the survey’s top ten.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The Center is a division of e.Republic, the nation’s only media and research company focused exclusively on state and local government and education.

“As the capital of Silicon Valley, it has always been the goal of the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation to ensure that the advances created here are used to enable all residents of San José to connect to their government and improve their lives,” said Shireen Santosham, San José Chief Innovation Officer. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have those efforts recognized and remain committed to continuing to open up technology to empower San Joseans.”

Among the City of San Jose’s initiatives includes the expansion of digital equity through public-private partnerships, seeking to bridge the digital divide in San José through a Digital Inclusion Fund to connect 50,000 households with universal device access and universal connectivity.

“San José is making progress toward the ambitious Smart City Vision set by the Mayor and Council. City teams have done amazing work, including core modernizations, cybersecurity, inclusion, privacy, and AI initiatives,” said Rob Lloyd, Chief Information Officer for the City’s Information Technology department. “It’s important to San José as we partnered to address aspects of equity, innovation, and climate change impacting our community.”

As part of its research, the Center for Digital Government has featured a list of top technologies and initiatives which are likely to have an increased focus in the next year:

1. Cybersecurity
