San José Walk n’ Roll at the 2024 National Safe Routes to School Conference
Ann Jasper, our Walk n’ Roll manager, spoke at the Safe Routes to School National Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado held October 22 – 24. She focused on our open streets event, Viva EscuelaSJ, which we’ve brought to several schools to help students and their families discover the joy of walking and rolling.
The Conference featured presentations about ways to boost the number of students walking and rolling to school. A favorite was a session about creating a “traffic garden,” a playground- friendly course of mini-streets designed to teach kids about safe walking and biking skills. Other sessions covered ways to promote student walking groups, how to engage middle and high school students in traffic safety advocacy, and introduced game-based safety education.
We had a large turnout from various Bay Area organizations who support Walk n’ Roll programming such as Santa Clara County Public Health, the San Mateo County Office of Education and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. We look forward to using some of these creative ways to inspire more San Jose kids to walk, bike and scooter to school!
