Heart Healthy

February is National Heart Health Month!

February is the perfect time to focus on keeping our hearts healthy and active. Here are some tips for promoting heart health and safety for students:

  • Get Active: Walking, biking, dancing, and sports are great options to stay active.
  • Walking and Biking Safety:
  • Always use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Wear helmets when biking and ensure bikes are in good condition.
  • Walk or bike with friends to stay safe and have fun.
  • Limit Screen Time: Take breaks from screens to get moving and improve both physical and mental health.
  • Drink Water: Stay hydrated and keep your heart strong.
  • Manage Stress: Relax with activities like drawing, reading, or deep breathing.

Let's work together to build lasting heart-healthy habits. Here's to a happy and healthy February!

Coffee at the Crosswalk!

Coffee at the Croswalk

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the recent Coffee at the Crosswalk event at Sakamoto Elementary! This event was a great success thanks to the collaboration and support from the San Jose Police Department, Sakamoto Elementary School, Walk ‘n Roll, and the Santa Teresa Foothills Neighborhood Association, and the Mayor’s Office. Together, we worked to promote pedestrian safety and help keep our students safe while walking and rolling to school.

A friendly reminder to all parents: Please remember to drive safely, slow down, and follow traffic rules around the school. Let’s work together to keep our students safe on the roads!

School Safety Program

The City of San José Department of Transportation’s School Safety Program, which started in 2022, is working with the Walk n’ Roll Program to make school areas safer for everyone—students, staff, and the community. This important program focuses on key areas like improving traffic flow during busy drop-off and pick-up times, making sure crosswalks and signs are clear and easy to see, and finding ways to increase safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

As part of the program, the team conducts "Access & Circulation Studies." During these visits, they come on-site to observe traffic conditions, how traffic flows, and other factors that affect safety around the school. They work closely with school staff, parents, and the community to gather feedback and identify any safety concerns. Together, they will come up with solutions to improve the area, in an effort to increase safety for everyone in the area. The goal is to ensure that everyone can get to and from school safely!

If you are interested in an Access & Circulation study for your school, please contact your Walk n’ Roll Program Coordinator or Ricardo Morales, ricardo.morales@sanjoseca.gov

Check out one of our completed crosswalk enhancements at Sartorette Elementary School! Our team recently upgraded the crosswalks to high-visibility markings at four key intersections. These changes are meant to make it easier for drivers to see students crossing the street, which will help keep them safer at the intersections.

Trace Elementary Safe Routes to Schools Summit

Trace Elementary Walk n’ Roll invites San Francisco Bay Area school community members to a Safe Routes to Schools Summit on the morning of Saturday, April 26, 2025. School communities throughout our region have taken a variety of actions to support and encourage students getting to school without driving. Many other schools, families, and neighborhoods would benefit from similar work to make it safer and more fun to get to school without driving.

We invite anyone who has done or is interested in this work to attend this free, in-person gathering. We want to hear from you as potential participants via a short survey: https://bit.ly/SafeRoutesSchools2025
