April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month: Stay Focused, Stay Safe!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder that staying focused on the road is important for the safety of our students, families, and community. Whether you are dropping off kids at school, driving through a neighborhood, or heading to work, keeping your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel helps protect everyone—especially young walkers and bikers. Distracted driving is not just about texting—it includes scrolling through social media, checking notifications, or even eating while driving.

Distracted Driver

Stay safe by practicing these tips:

  • If you need to text, pull over and park first.

  • Use your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature, silence notifications. Put your phone away to avoid temptation.

  • If you have a passenger, let them be your "designated texter."

  • If you see someone texting and driving, speak up and ask them to stop.

Students who walk or bike to school also play a role in staying safe. Always use crosswalks, look both ways before crossing, and wear a helmet when biking. Parents, you can help by setting a good example—put the phone away while driving, follow speed limits in school zones, and watch for students on foot or bikes. By working together, we can create safer streets and keep our community accident-free!

City of San José Department of Transportation (DOT) Reminds Drivers to Stay Focused

The City of San José Department of Transportation is working to keep roads safe! Starting March 31, electronic signs will remind drivers to pay attention with messages like:

Drive with Care

  • Eyes up, phone down

  • People crossing

  • Drive with care / Conduce con cuidado

These signs will be placed in areas where distracted driving has led to crashes.

Where and When You'll See the Signs:

  • March 31 - April 6: Blossom Hill Rd, Branham Ln, Hillsdale Ave

  • April 14 - April 20: Tully Rd, Story Rd, McLaughlin Ave, Quimby Rd

  • April 28 - May 4: Alum Rock Ave, McKee Rd, Camden Ave, Leigh Ave, The Alameda

Let’s make our streets safer—stay alert, watch for people, and put the phone away while driving!

Celebrate Earth Day: Walk or Bike to School for a Healthier Planet

Earth Day

Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd, and it is the perfect time to do something good for our planet! One simple way to help is by walking or biking to school instead of driving. Fewer cars on the road mean cleaner air, less pollution, and safer streets for everyone. Plus, it is a fun way to start the day—getting fresh air, seeing friends, and maybe even finding new shortcuts through your neighborhood!

Walking and biking are not only great for the Earth—they are great for your health, too! Moving your body helps you feel more energized and ready to learn. Remember to stay safe by wearing a helmet when biking, using crosswalks, and sticking to safe routes. Many schools have special paths and bike racks to make it easier. This Earth Day, take action—grab your bike, lace up your shoes, and help make a difference!
