Avoid fines: Five ways to keep your property beautiful and up to code
Spring is luring many of us outside to enjoy the warm weather. It’s also a good time to make sure you’re properly maintaining your home. Exterior code violations in San José can lead to fines of $250 or more.
The good news is that most issues are easy to avoid if you know what to look out for- and the City has free resources to help!
Keep front yards tidy. Do not store lumber, dirt, household items or other debris in front yards, driveways, porches or other areas that are visible from the street. Schedule a free junk pickup by calling 3-1-1 or go to 311.sanjoseca.gov. Or contact your council office to learn when the next Dumpster Day is scheduled in your neighborhood.
Remove graffiti. Remove graffiti from your buildings, structures, fences, vehicles, and boats. Find graffiti removal tips at bit.ly/SJRemoveGraffiti. Report the possibility of gang-related graffiti at 311.sanjoseca.gov or call 3-1-1. Store non-working vehicles out of view.
Store a non-working vehicle out of view, not in the driveway. You can place it in a side yard or backyard, at least five feet from a fence or property line. Do not block bedroom windows. Wanting go get rid of a car taking up space on your property? We’ll tow it for you! Sign up online or call (408) 535-7770 for a free pickup of an unwanted car that you own.
Park vehicles on paved surfaces only. Park on the driveway or street, not on lawn, gravel, dirt or between the curb and sidewalk. Never pave over your front yard; you may be cited and required to pull out the pavement.
Trim grass and remove dry vegetation. Reduce fire hazards and rodent habitat by trimming grass/weeds to under 12 inches in height. Remove and dispose of any dry or dead vegetation
