May is National Bike and Roll Month!

Put on your helmet and get your roll on! National Bike & Roll to School Day is Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

National Bike and Roll to School Day is an annual event that encourages students of all ages to participate in active commuting. This event is a great way to encourage students to exercise and reduce traffic on the roads while improving air quality.

Join in on the celebration by encouraging your kids or students to bike or roll to school. Whether it’s a scooter, skateboard, rollerblades or a bike - get out there and have some fun! Not only will you be helping the environment, but it is a great way to stay active while building confidence.

While May 7 is this year’s official date, schools are welcome to celebrate any day in May that best fits their schedules. Let your Walk n’ Roll coordinator know if you would like support for your event!

While we are highlighting and promoting bicycling as an amazing form of transportation, students can walk, scooter, skateboard or utilize ANY form of active transportation to school that day! You can even include students who carpool, park and walk, or bus if that makes the most sense for your school.

The Bike Rack Decorating Contest registration is now open!

Bike Rack Decorating Contest

Elementary, Middle, and High Schools are invited to participate in the Santa Clara County Bike Rack Decorating Contest in celebration of Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 7! The contest will run from April 21 - May 9, 2025.

The first 20 schools to register will receive a bike rack decorating contest starter kit. If you receive a starter kit, you can use more than the supplies provided to decorate your bike rack(s). Be creative, and let your imagination create a bike rack masterpiece. Interested schools can register online or visit www.sccphd.org/walkbikeevents for more information. 

The winning school will be announced by the week of May 19. The school will receive the Golden Bike Award!

Contest rules:

1. Register your school (K-12) by May 2, 2025. Registration opens April 14.
2. Decorate your school bike rack(s) at least one time from April 21 through May 9.
3. Submit at least one photo of your decorated bike rack by May 9 by emailing daisy.garcia@phd.sccgov.org.
4. Adults, be sure to have students actively involved with the bike rack decorating.

Viva EscuelaSJ – Horace Mann Elementary School Event 

On Friday, April 4th, 2025, Horace Mann Elementary hosted Viva EscuelaSJ event, and it was a huge success! Even though it was early in the morning, we had a fantastic turnout. Students and their families had the unique opportunity to experience an open street—one block in front of the school was closed to vehicles, which meant no morning drop-off chaos. Instead, families enjoyed a calm, safe, and fun space to walk, bike, and connect with others before school started. Many students biked in with their helmets, while others walked to school early to take part in the excitement. The event also featured a Resource Fair with great information and resources for families. 

We want to give a big thank you to our amazing community partners and the Horace Mann community for making this event possible. Your continued support helps create safe, welcoming, and fun experiences for our students and families. We could not do it without you!
