San José City Hall, City Offices Closed on May 26, 2025: While most City services will be closed in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday, public safety and utility services will operate.
Customer Contact Center (San José 311): An answering service will provide information and assist callers. Non-emergency requests requiring follow-up will be routed to the proper department and handled during open business hours.
San José Public Library: All San José Public Library locations will be closed. The library’s eBook collection, eLibrary card registration, eLearning resources, and streaming services are always available at www.sjpl.org.
Garbage and Recycling Service: Garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings collection will not be affected by the holiday and will occur on your normal day. Residents can contact their garbage, recycling, junk pickup, and yard trimmings company or use San José 311 for more information. San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) Passengers Need a Real ID Starting May 7: Beginning May 7, 2025, passengers will need a Real ID or another acceptable form of identification (like a passport or passport card) to fly within the United States. Summer Youth and Teen Programs Open for Registration: The Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department offers a variety of affordable summer camps and programs for children and teens ages 3–18. From art and sports to science and outdoor adventure, activities are available at community centers throughout the city.
Programs include preschool camps, full-day enrichment camps, and teen centers with free drop-in activities. Registration is open and financial assistance may be available for qualifying families.
Be a Hero to the Kittens in our Community: Spring is kitten season and kittens arrive at the San José Animal Care Center needing round-the-clock care. The best way to help is to become a kitten foster. Fosters help the shelter keep kittens healthy, comfortable and nurtured in a home environment before they are ready for adoption. Free Legal Services for San José-based Small Business Owners: The City of San José and partner Elevate Community Center offer free legal services for San José-based small businesses. Receive assistance with litigation, drafting and reviewing contracts, incorporation and formation services, and more. Services are also offered in Spanish and Vietnamese. Disability Access Improvement Grants for Small Businesses: The City's Disability Access Improvement Grants program will support your responsibility to comply with the Federal Americans with Disability Act and the California Building Code. The grant will help you pay for a Certified Access Specialist report and hire professionals to design and remove ADA barriers. Learn more about qualifying for grant assistance.

May Park Volunteer Events: Volunteer to clean up San José parks with the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department. Volunteer events provide a fun way for residents to enjoy outdoor spaces and support their community. All volunteers ages 6+ are welcome to participate. Participants under 18 are required to present a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Volunteers are provided with the necessary tools, and training and are asked to bring a water bottle, snacks, and wear closed-toed shoes. Bike to Work Day is May 15:Bike to Work Day is an annual event with hundreds of “Energizer Stations” set up for bicyclists throughout the Bay Area. These rest stops have free snacks, bicycling information, and tote bags full of goodies, organized by City partner Silicon Valley Bike Coalition.
In celebration of Bike to Work Day, the Transportation Department is hosting an Energizer Station outside the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, at the southeast corner of Fourth and San Fernando streets from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. Pedal by to say hi and refuel. Register on Eventbrite.
May is Building Safety Month: You're invited to the Building Safety Month Open House + Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Fair on Thursday, May 22 in the City Hall Rotunda. Senior Safari at Happy Hollow: Senior Safari season, presented by Kaiser Permanente, officially kicks off on Thursday, May 22, and will take place through October. Visitors aged 50 and up are invited to take over San José’s iconic Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and feel like a kid again. From 9 to 10 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month, seniors get exclusive access to Happy Hollow for one hour before the park and zoo opens to the public.
