San José Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Department Participating in Summer Food Service Program
Meals for eligible children available free of charge

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 28, 2025) – Over the summer months, all eligible children will have free meals available through the City of San José’s participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Bascom Community Center, Emma Prusch Farm Park, Mayfair Community Center, Roosevelt Community Center, Seven Trees Community Center, Starbird Youth Center, and Welch Park will offer lunch and afternoon snacks at no cost to community youth ages 5 to 16 who are enrolled in Camp San José, F.I.T. Camp, and Teen Centers. This summer will mark the 15th year the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) Department has been an SFSP sponsor.

“I am deeply grateful that the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is participating for the 15th year in the Summer Food Service Program and providing children in our most vulnerable communities with access to healthy and nutritious free meals during the summer,” said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “This program is vital to addressing food insecurity in our community and showing our ongoing commitment to the well-being of every child in our city.”

Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, SFSP ensures low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. These seven San José locations are among the approved SFSP sites that will serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 years and under throughout the United States this summer.

“Kids should be worried about sunscreen and swim races, not empty plates during summer break,” said Mayor Matt Mahan. "I want to thank the PRNS team for investing in the next generation through the Summer Food Service Program for the 15th year running."

To be eligible to receive free meals at a residential or non-residential camp, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are part of households that receive Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids (CalWORKs), Kinship Guardian Assistance Payment (Kin-GAP), or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits are automatically eligible to receive free meals.
