As part of the City’s goal of moving 1,000 homeless people off the streets, it recently broke ground on its latest tiny home project. The Cerone Interim Housing Community, being built on a six-acre parcel leased from the Valley Transportation Agency (VTA), will house 200 people in 47 single-story manufactured homes when it is completed in the fall.

Outdoor amenities will include two pet runs, storage spaces, and, possibly, a community garden area. Mental health services and case management will be provided, as will 24-hour security.

The City secured $12.7 million in funding from the state to purchase the tiny homes. The City is leasing the land from VTA for five-years. The leased site is at 3990 Zanker Road, adjacent to the VTA’s Cerone work yard off Highway 237 in north San José.

The City has added 1,400 placements for homeless people this year between tiny homes, safe parking and sleeping sites, and hotel and motel conversions. More than 700 additional beds will be added this year with the construction of tiny homes on Cherry Avenue and at Monterey/Branham, and the expansion of the Rue Ferrari site.
