As part of this effort, firefighters will conduct visual risk evaluations at nearly 7,000 homes located in the eastern and southern foothills of San José. Residents will receive tailored information on how to better protect their property by making their homes more fire resilient by creating defensible space, reducing fuels, and preparing for evacuations. Details about Genasys Protect, a new tool now available in San José to support evacuation readiness, will also be included. Cleaning Up Columbus Park: The City of San José will begin the Columbus Park encampment abatement on Aug. 18, with work expected to continue through the end of October. The site has become one of the City's largest and most complex encampments. Deteriorating conditions pose significant health and safety risks to the individuals and families living there, the surrounding community, and City, contractor, and nonprofit staff providing services. Outreach teams have engaged with unhoused residents for months to offer shelter, food, clothing, housing navigation, and case management. After the abatement, Columbus Park, Guadalupe Gardens, and the nearby Guadalupe River Trail will be designated No Encampment Zones to prevent re-encampment. The abatement will also allow the City to move forward with its revitalization plan to restore the park as a welcoming space for everyone. The City remains committed to a compassionate approach to encampment management that balances the need for safe, accessible public spaces with support for our unhoused community. Read more about the Encampment Management Program and No Encampment Zones at BeautifySJ Encampment Management.
