SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 14, 2025) – On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., San José Police Department (SJPD) and San Jose Fire Department (SJFD) responded to a report of a person shot in the area of Asbury Street and Walnut Street. Officers located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the head, later determined to be self-inflicted.
SJFD and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel responded, completed an initial assessment, and pronounced the patient deceased at 6:46 p.m.
Approximately 45 minutes later, officers observed signs of life and immediately requested SJFD’s return. SJFD and EMS personnel responded, initiated treatment, and transported the patient to Valley Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased at 2:34 a.m. on Thursday, August 14.

“Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We recognize the distress this situation may cause and are committed to providing clear and accurate information about the events. I have conferred with the Fire Chief, who will ensure that patient care actions are thoroughly reviewed and that any necessary follow-up actions are taken.”
Statement from the Fire Department:
"Traumatic calls are always challenging for first responders. Our well-trained personnel responded promptly and provided the highest level of care. A preliminary review indicates that responders’ actions were consistent with emergency medical services patient care protocols. This response presented unusual circumstances, and as such, the Fire Department will conduct a thorough after-action review as part of our ongoing quality assurance process."
The City of San José will share updates as appropriate. No further details about the individual are being released at this time out of respect for privacy.
