September is National Preparedness Month. Observed each year by emergency agencies across the country, this month is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of being ready for disasters of all kinds. Here in San José, it’s also the height of wildfire season, making preparation more important than ever. This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” is a reminder to get back to the basics of emergency readiness. Whether it's a wildfire, earthquake, or power outage, taking steps now can keep you and your loved ones safe later. Here’s how to get started:
Know your risks. Understand what types of disasters are most likely in your area so you can plan accordingly.
Make a family emergency plan. Create an emergency family plan that’s easy to follow and helps reduce panic, save time, and minimize costs when disaster strikes. To get started, decide on a meeting spot, identify escape routes, designate an out-of-town contact, and prepare for the needs of vulnerable family members.
Build an emergency kit. An emergency supply kit is a collection of critical items and basic necessities your household may need in the event of an emergency. Stock up on essentials like food, water, medication, and other emergency supplies. Make sure it's easy to grab in case you need to leave quickly.
Get involved. Learn lifesaving skills like CPR or first aid, or join a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). CERT programs teach basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Disasters don’t wait, so don’t wait to prepare. This week, commit to at least one action, such as updating your emergency kit or talking with your family about evacuation routes. Your family will thank you. Learn more at www.SJFD.org. Stay safe, San José!Return to full list >>
