Background:
Red-light running is the second-highest contributing factor to traffic deaths and severe injuries in San José. In June of 2022, the San José City Council approved a pilot project for a red-light running camera system. This system uses automated technology to capture photos of vehicles that run red lights and issue citations to the owners of those vehicles. The pilot project aims to reduce dangerous driving behavior at intersections where red-light violations are most common.
Four red light cameras will be installed at the following locations. The locations were selected using crash and red-light running data:
Leigh Avenue and Parkmoor Avenue
Monterey Road and Branham Lane
Keyes Street and South Third Street
South Bascom Avenue and Camden Avenue
City leaders will discuss the City’s traffic safety goals, share crash and fatality statistics, and see the newly installed camera system at the intersection of Monterey Road and Branham Lane.
