 What: Invisible Skies is an immersive pop-up flash performance art event where 2,000 participants will carry and interact with unique prop umbrellas that display images from various celestial bodies, and where artists and community members work together to create stunning imagery.
 When: Sat., Jan. 31, 2026
5:15 p.m. - Welcome remarks from Mayor Matt Mahan
5:30 - 6:00 p.m. - Umbrella distribution
6:00 - 7:30 p.m. - Event time

Media parking and staging area:
Park on 5th street, entering from St. John. Staging area will be northwest corner of 5th and Santa Clara Streets.

*No flash photography or camera lights during the event portion. Black clothing is encouraged.

 Background: This event is a collaboration between ETProjects and the City of San José’s Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs. The event is also part of the 2026 San José-based art activations and installations coinciding with the major sporting events coming to the South Bay.

Invisible Skies activities and performances include:

5:30 – 7:30 p.m. - Telescopes for public viewing of stars and planet Jupiter, courtesy of SETI Institute, San Jose Astronomical Association and Lick Observatory

6 p.m. - Discover New Ballet performing in silhouette

6:10 p.m. - SJ Taiko live performance + start of performance art event

6:30 p.m. - Bloco do Sol live performance

7:00 p.m. - Mariachi Estelar live performance
