Advisory Detail
What: Viva CalleSJ is an open streets program that brings communities together by temporarily closing streets to motor vehicles, creating space for walking, biking, skating, and other non-motorized activities at participants’ own pace.

The “Eastside Quest” route runs along White Road and Alum Rock Avenue, forming a goalpost-shaped pathway that connects some of East San José’s most beloved destinations. Participants can chart their own adventure while discovering local art, culture, music, and family-friendly activities through interactive “side quests” along the way.

The April event launches a three-part 2026 series, with additional events scheduled for Sunday, June 14 and Sunday, September 13, each highlighting a different part of San José and its unique character.
 When:
Sunday, April 19, 2026
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where:  Start anywhere along the route. Activity hubs will be located at:
  • Mexican Heritage Plaza
  • Alum Rock Village
  • Cimarron Park
  • Fernish Park
Visit vivacallesj.org for a map and activity details.
Background: For more than a decade, Viva CalleSJ has brought communities together while promoting active transportation, sustainability, and local economic activity. A recent study from fall 2025 highlights the program’s continued impact. According to findings from San José State University Mineta Transportation Institute, the September 2025 event that drew an estimated 150,000 participants indicated 78.5% or just over 100,000 of them spent money during the event, with an average of $53.67 per person.

These outcomes demonstrate the program’s continued success in connecting neighborhoods and creating equitable access to public space.
