San Fernando Street prepares for major upgrades

Post Date:05/07/2026 4:30 PM

A bicyclist crosses an intersection in one direction while a man and a woman prepare to enter the sidewalk in the other direction

The next step in our Better Bikeways Phase 2 project will revitalize San Fernando Street, from 11th Street to Almaden Boulevard. Improvements along this major downtown corridor will improve safety for all users, whether they’re walking, biking, or driving.

Construction is starting in mid-May and will continue through summer 2027. Work will happen in phases: demolition and civil construction will happen first, followed by striping and signal upgrades.

The final design of the street will include protected bikeways (some with landscaping), traffic signal modifications, new striping, and improved curbs and pavement that will allow for shorter, safer pedestrian and bicyclist crossings.

As with any construction project, there will be some noise, dust, and traffic interruptions. Though the City and our contractors will work to minimize disruptions, locals and nearby businesses can expect:

  • Temporary lane closures and traffic shifts
  • Construction noise and dust during working hours
  • Intermittent driveway and sidewalk access adjustments
Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, approximately 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. We will maintain access to businesses and residences at all times. If you have questions or concerns about the construction, please contact:

Thank you for your patience while we make San Fernando Street safer and more beautiful!
