A trip to Alcatraz State Park on Feb. 19 was the first time many of the 28 teens who participated traveled outside the City of San José. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services’ 12 Teen Centers and the Out-of-School Time Program hosted the first teen field trip of 2020, made possible by a grant from the Santa Clara County Probation Department. Teens, 11-17 years old, from Alum Rock, Alma, Bascom and Roosevelt community centers sailed the San Francisco Bay to learn about the island’s history. Teen trips are an accessible way to connect teens to nature and education. According to the Trust for Public Land, access to nature reduces stress and promotes socialization.
