The following is information about the City of San José’s response to the latest guidance from the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department to protect the health of our community to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and reduce the number of people infected. Read the latest County guidance.  

  • On March 6, under City of San José Municipal Code Chapter 8.08, San José City Manager Dave Sykes signed a Proclamation of Local Emergency, which determines the legal, operational and recovery resources available for the City of San José to respond to the COVID-19 public health emergency. 

  • The health and safety of our employees, residents, businesses, and visitors remains the highest priority for the City of San José. We encourage those who are sick or who are at higher risk for serious illness to stay at home, and to observe the County’s guidance on social distancing during this time.  

  • City of San José Flash Reports will be issued at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Subscribe to the City of San José News Releases eNotification list to receive Flash Reports. Updates will be posted to the City of San José website, and communities can follow updates at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Nextdoor at @CityofSanJose. 

Updated: Cancellations and/or Changes to City Services and/or Operations  

  • Senior Meals Program: The City of San José’s Senior Nutrition Program will transition to a boxed to-go, pick-up format until further notice. 

  • Grace Art and Wellness Programs at Northside Community Center: Temporarily cancelled until Thursday, March 12. This allows staff to modify the program space to ensure program participants can practice social distancing. 

  • Pathways to Climate Smart Careers: The youth career fair that had been planned for Saturday, March 7, at the Fairmont San Jose, has been cancelled.  

  • "Career Exploration Day at the City of San José" in conjunction with San Jose State University, was scheduled for March 11 in the City Hall Rotunda, but has been postponed until Fall 2020.  

  • Rent Stabilization Program: the Community Workshop scheduled for March 12, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Rosemary Elementary School has been cancelled. 

  • Rooftop Solar Informational Meeting: San José Clean Energy has cancelled its meeting on Net Energy Metering (NEM) on March 16 at Edenvale Library. Customers may learn more about NEM by visiting our rooftop solar webpage, watching our virtual presentation, emailing customerservice@sanjosecleanenergy.org, or calling 833-432-2454.  

  • Non-Essential Employee Travel: The City of San José is restricting all non-essential travel for employees until the end of April.  

City Services and/or Operations NOT Changing  

  • San José Police and Fire Departments: Regular operations continue.  

  • Mineta San José International Airport: Regular operations continue, although Hainan Airlines has temporarily cancelled flights. Before heading to the airport, check with your airline for any flight changes. 

  • Garbage and Recycling Service: Garbage and Recycling service collection will continue as normal. Residents can contact their garbage, recycling, or yard trimmings company to report missed collections, damaged carts, or to change cart size. Visit www.sjenvironment.org/lookup to locate collection companies.  

  • Libraries: All City libraries are open during regular operating hours.  

  • Community Centers: Community Centers are open today during regular operating hours. Some services, meetings may be cancelled or postponed. Visit sanjoseca.gov for updates.  

  • General Parks and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, Regional and Neighborhood Parks are open today during regular operating hours. Some services, meetings may be cancelled or postponed. Visit sanjoseca.gov for updates.  

  • General Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer opportunities will proceed as scheduled today. Some services, meetings may be cancelled or postponed. Visit sanjoseca.gov for updates.  

  • General Senior and Recreation Programming: Community Centers are open today during regular operating hours. Visit sanjoseca.gov for updates. 

  • Animal Shelter: Facilities are open during regular hours. Some services and meetings may be cancelled or postponed. See notices posted at facilities, and check sanjoseca.gov for updates.  

  • Development Services and Permit Center: Regular operations continue.  

  • Team San José Event Facilities: The Convention Center, San Jose Civic, California Theatre, Montgomery Theater and the Center for Performing Arts will continue events as scheduled unless otherwise announced. 

  • Customer Contact Center: The City’s Customer Contact Center, located in the first floor lobby of City Hall, 200 E. Santa Clara Street, or by phone at 3-1-1 (408-535-3500), will continue regular operating hours. 


A person’s risk for COVID-19 is not related to race, ethnicity or culture. City employees must abide by the Discrimination and Harassment policy, and treat colleagues and members of the public with courtesy and respect. Discrimination and/or Harassment of any kind is a violation of the policies and will not be tolerated.
