Driveways & Sidewalks
For all types of properties
Updated: 03/23/2026
Except for the resurfacing of a driveway, a permit is required before relocating or modifying an existing driveway or sidewalk and before laying a new driveway or sidewalk.
Depending on the project, this permit will be obtained from the City's Public Works Department or Transportation Department as follows:
- Repairs and resurfacing - If the project entails repairs or resurfacing the driveway as located on the private property side of the sidewalk, no permit is needed.
- Driveway modifications - If the driveway is expanded or changes location, you will need a clearance or permit from the Public Works Department.
- Do not do this: It is illegal to expand a driveway in a manner that excessively paves over the front yard (Municipal Code 20.30.440). This may result in a code enforcement action and you will be required to remove the pavement.
- Sidewalk or curb repairs or changes - If the project entails changes or repairs to the sidewalk, curb, or driveway apron, you will need a permit from the Transportation Department.
