Here are common projects on single-family and duplex properties that need a building permit. If you are not sure a permit is needed, read When Is a Building Permit Required?

> Standard Plan Review Service 

• Use this permit service for any project unless it qualifies for one of the other faster, lower-cost services listed here. Find instructions at Standard Plan Review Service.

> Online Building Permits through SJPermits.org 

• Several electrical, mechanical, or plumbing projects qualify for an online building permit — see Online Building Permits. 

> Simple Projects Service

• We issue the permit during your visit to the Permit Center for a handful of simple projects such as chimney repairs, standby generators, etc. Find qualifying projects at Simple Projects Service. 

> Over-the-Counter Service

• For several projects involving only basic plans, we issue the permit during your visit if you either upload the plans before you visit or bring the plans. See Over-the-Counter Service. 

> Residential Express

• For qualifying additions/remodels or accessory buildings (sheds, detached garages, playhouses, gazebos, etc.) on a single-family property, you will upload your plans for expedited permit issuance through an online meeting.
