City Hall Peregrine Falcons
Peregrine Falcon fans from around the globe tune in to San José’s wildest reality show, currently featuring two unbanded adults, Hartley and Monty, who make their home in a nest box located atop a ledge on the 18th floor of City Hall in San José, California, the Capital of Silicon Valley. Hartley arrived at City Hall early in the 2023 season, along with Monty, who arrived as a 2nd year juvenile tiercel (male peregrine), still sporting his juvenile plumage.
The San José City Hall peregrines have their own discussion forum, Facebook page, a wiki, and the live streaming feeds below, where fans may view them 24-7. The wiki provides greater detail on the resident pairs and their progeny over the years.
THE NESTCAMS
Since 2007, Peregrine Falcon fans have been privileged to witness the fascinating lives of the peregrine falcons settled atop City Hall through the lens of the Falcon Cams, maintained by the City of San José in partnership with the Predatory Bird Research Group (PBRG) at the University of California – Santa Cruz. In 2024, the PBRG and Institute for Wildlife Studies installed a new camera system. The current set-up includes three camera feeds that provide panoramic views of the nest and the ledges where the peregrines can often be found. These new cameras are the result of numerous donations by nestcam viewers.
Prior to Hartley and Monty, the resident peregrines (unbanded unless otherwise noted) were:
- 2023: Shasta (banded) & Sequoia (banded); Shasta succumbed to the Avian bird flu in February 2023, Sequoia disappeared shortly thereafter.
- 2019-Sept 2022: Grace (banded) with Hopper (May 2019-March 2020), H2 (2020), Lucas (late 2021-March 2022), TT/Pedro (2022 - Sept 2022)
- 2006- May 2019: Clara, with numerous mates - José (2006-2007), Carlos (2008, banded), EC (2009-2012), Fernando (2012-May 2019).

Predatory Bird Research Group at UCSC – providing educational outreach services to school & community groups in San José about peregrine falcons; offering expert advice to the City regarding peregrines; and monitoring nest productivity as well as the health and movements of the SJ City Hall and SF PG&E chicks. Each Spring, PBRG biologists enter the nest to check chick health and place leg bands on the chicks to help monitor them through their lifetime. These leg bands also help to differentiate the young peregrines from one another as they grow up on camera and eventually take their first flights from the nest ledge. There are over 30 active nests in the San Francisco Bay Area that are part of the PBRG peregrine monitoring program.
