How to give public comments in person

Infographic outlining six steps to give public comment at a city council meeting: prepare a brief one-minute statement, submit a speaker card, show support without applause, line up when called, speak into the microphone, and optionally submit written comments to the City Clerk.

Participating in public comment is a valuable way to share your views. Follow these steps to make your voice heard:

1. Prepare Your Comments
Plan your remarks in advance so you can clearly communicate your message within one minute, in case speaking time is limited.

2. Submit a Speaker Card
At the meeting, fill out a speaker card and submit it to the City Clerk. Please write legibly so your name can be called accurately.

3. Be Respectful During Others’ Comments
While others are speaking, you may show support using silent gestures (such as raising your hand). Please refrain from applause to ensure all speakers can be heard.

4. Wait to Be Called
When your name is called, please line up behind the podium.

5. Speak Clearly
When it’s your turn, step up to the microphone and deliver your comments.

6. Submit Written Comments (Optional)
After speaking, you may provide a written copy of your comments to the City Clerk for the official record.
