IPA Externship Program — Office of the Independent Police Auditor, San José

The IPA Externship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of civilian police oversight and public accountability.
This competitive program is designed for students with a passion for public service, social justice, criminal justice reform, or community engagement. Externs work closely with the IPA team to contribute to meaningful projects that impact transparency, equity, and trust in law enforcement practices.
What Is the Externship Program?
The IPA Externship is an academic-term program (fall, spring, or summer) in which selected students contribute to the day-to-day work of the IPA office. Externs assist with:
- Research case law on oversight practices and police interactions
- Conduct case analysis on complaints filed through the IPA
- Review and support the complaint intake process
- Observe police misconduct interviews, meetings, audits, and trainings related to police accountability
Purpose of the Program
- Educate students about the functions of independent police oversight
- Develop practical skills in research, policy, communication, and public service
- Foster the next generation of professionals committed to transparency and equity
- Encourage critical thinking about justice, fairness, and community engagement
