Adopt a Storm Drain
First launched on Earth Day 2024 by Councilmember Rosemary Kamei in City Council District 1, the Adopt-a-Storm Drain pilot program is now available Citywide. The Environmental Services Department’s Watershed Protection Division is leading this volunteer effort to educate and empower communities to take part in reducing water pollution - because only rain should go down the storm drain!
Who can adopt a storm drain?
The program invites all San José residents, businesses, schools, and community groups to help protect the community and environment by keeping storm drains clear. When storm drains are blocked by leaves, trash, or litter, rainwater cannot flow through which can cause flooding. Cleaning storm drains prevents dirty water and pollution from entering our creeks and rivers, which flow into the San Francisco Bay. Learn more about San José watersheds and tips to protect them at our Watershed Maps resources page.
