Republic Blue Garbage Truck

COMMERCIAL Recycling & Garbage Service

San José businesses receive solid waste collection service from Republic Services.

Republic Services has an exclusive franchise agreement, amended and restated on May 22, 2020 with the City of San José to collect recycling, organics, and non-organic garbage from all businesses.

For waste services not included in Republic’s agreement, businesses can choose a City-approved non-exclusive hauler.

The Wet/Dry system views all waste as a resource. San José businesses subscribe to “Wet” collection service for organics, such as food waste, coffee grounds, landscape waste, food/drink soiled paper/fiber products, and food soiled napkins, and “Dry” collection service for recyclables and everything else. Some San José businesses also receive "Customized" collection service for source separated recyclables. Some Dry and all Customized materials are processed locally at the Newby Island Resource Recovery Park.

Material delivered to the Zero-Waste Energy Development (ZWED) facility is sorted and undergoes anaerobic digestion per the agreement with the City of San José

After sorting:

  • Recyclable materials are captured for reuse, diverting them from landfill.
  • Electricity and compost are produced from the processed Wet and Dry Garbage materials.
