Credits and Reimbursements for San José Commercial Customers
We understand the July 8–18, 2025 solid waste collection service interruption created challenges for some San José businesses. Reliable collection service is essential to daily operations, and we want to make sure impacted customers are aware of available options to help recover eligible collection-related costs.
Republic Services has confirmed it is providing collection service credits and, where eligible, third-party hauling reimbursements via credits for San José commercial customers impacted during this period.
If your business was impacted by missed waste collections, here is how you request credits:
- This applies to all commercial customers who had missed collections during July 8-18, 2025. Simply contact Republic Services to request a credit for missed collections and you will receive a credit based on the collection services portion of your bill only (credits do not include disposal, processing, or franchise, sections or other City-related fees).
- Republic Services will also credit any late fees assessed for customers who deducted an anticipated credit from their invoice.
- Please have your Republic Services billing invoice and account number available when calling to submit a request.
- Once processed, the credit will appear on the following month’s bill.
Additionally, if you hired a third-party hauling company to handle waste collections, you could request an additional reimbursement in the form of credits:
- Customers who hired a third-party hauler to remove solid waste during the service interruption may be eligible for a credit of up to 40% of their regular monthly Republic Services bill, provided costs can be verified. This does not apply to self-hauling.
- Verification requires: a dated and itemized bill from the third-party hauler, and proof of payment
Deadline: Requests for collection service credits and third-party hauling reimbursements must be submitted during the application window of March 2 to May 1, 2026. To request a credit or reimbursement: Contact Republic Services at 408-432-1234, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For additional information, please visit the Republic Services website.
The City of San José is sharing this information to help ensure businesses have clear steps to pursue available relief options related to collection services.
COMMERCIAL Recycling & Garbage Service
San José businesses receive solid waste collection service from Republic Services.
Republic Services has an exclusive franchise agreement, amended and restated on May 22, 2020 with the City of San José to collect recycling, organics, and non-organic garbage from all businesses.
For waste services not included in Republic’s agreement, businesses can choose a City-approved non-exclusive hauler.
The Wet/Dry system views all waste as a resource. San José businesses subscribe to “Wet” collection service for organics, such as food waste, coffee grounds, landscape waste, food/drink soiled paper/fiber products, and food soiled napkins, and “Dry” collection service for recyclables and everything else. Some San José businesses also receive "Customized" collection service for source separated recyclables. Some Dry and all Customized materials are processed locally at the Newby Island Resource Recovery Park.
Material delivered to the Zero-Waste Energy Development (ZWED) facility is sorted and undergoes anaerobic digestion per the agreement with the City of San José.
After sorting:
- Recyclable materials are captured for reuse, diverting them from landfill.
- Electricity and compost are produced from the processed Wet and Dry Garbage materials.
Benefits to Businesses
- Compliance with state recycling laws
- Manage your account anywhere and at any time using the Republic Services’ app
- Dedicated representatives are available to provide recycling assistance to your business
- Reduced noise and pollution through compressed natural gas trucks
