Strategically located in the heart of San José, the San José Fire Training Center and Emergency Operations Center lays the foundation for everything we do to protect our community. From firefight training to emergency management, this facility embodies our dedication to city-wide safety and readiness.

Stretched over 75,900 square feet, this state-of-the-art facility re-imagines three distinct spaces: Fire Department Training, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Emergency Operations Center. It provides greater firefighting training capabilities and enhanced emergency management services to better support the City of San José's emergency response capabilities.

Facility Operations

  • Fire Academy: SJFD operates a comprehensive 20-week Firefighter Recruit Academy and a 10-week Lateral Firefighter Academy at this facility. These academies are comprised of rigorous academic and physical curriculum that cover a wide variety of fire service skills and knowledge.   • Specialized Training: This facility also serves to train and advance active fire personnel throughout their entire career. SJFD's Training Division operates in this facility and manages professional development, quarterly skills assessment, NAPD Driver Training, Class B DMV licensing, and credential tracking. SJFD also offer specialized training for line personnel who want to join the department's Hazardous Incident Team (HIT), Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR), or Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Team (ARFF).
  • Emergency Medical Services: SJFD's Emergency Medical Services Division operates provides continuous EMS education, quality assurance, maintains certificates, purchases medical equipment, and provides infection control.
  • Office of Emergency Management: The City's Office of Emergency Management leads the effort to protect life, property, and the environment by developing, coordinating and managing programs that prevent, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate natural and man-made disasters and emergencies.
  • Emergency Operations Center (EOC): The City's primary Emergency Operations Center is located at this facility. It's the central command and control facility from which the City of San José provides interagency coordination and executive decision making in support of incident response and recovery operations. 

Facility Structures

  • Classroom & Office Building: This primary building spans over 32,112 sq. ft. It houses seven modernized classrooms and contains vital operational offices for San José Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management staff. This includes SJFD's Fire Academy, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Training, and Fire Information Technology.
  • Emergency Operations Center: The Emergency Operations Center is equipped with a public lobby, executive rooms, and cutting-edge communication and situation rooms. 
  • Apparatus Bay: This multi-purpose warehouse is used to store a variety of fire training apparatus. It also contains a full gym with ample equipment for functional strength and endurance training, a breakroom, turnout storage rooms for both training staff and firefighter recruits, and an air room for refilling SCBA air bottles.
  • Training Tower & Auxiliary Buildings: Experience meets realism in our state-of-the-art training tower and auxiliary buildings. Here, firefighters confront every conceivable challenge on our diverse training grounds. This portion of the facility includes: six-story fire training tower, four-story apartment tower, two-story residential tower, seven-story repelling deck, big box store/warehouse tower, strip mall mock up, stuck elevator prop, mock PG&E power lines, and a vehicle extrication area.

This design-bid-build project is a collaborative effort between multiple City of San José departments: San José Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, and Public Works. Design by Ten Over Studio and G2 Solutions Group and construction by Zovich Construction.
