Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS

Annually, the City of San José receives funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program. The program is exclusively dedicated to the housing needs of people living with HIV / AIDS.

Under the HOPWA program, HUD makes grants to local communities, States, and nonprofit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV / AIDS. The City of San José selects its grantees through a competitive process that provides such services as tenant based rental assistance, support services to clients with HIV / AIDS, and assistance with identifying affordable housing.

Bay Area Community Health (BACH)	Rental Assistance & Support Services for Individuals Living with HIV/AIDS in Santa Clara County	$1,521,873	The program supports low-income Santa Clara County residents living with HIV/AIDS. The primary purpose of the Program is to provide permanent supportive housing to participants and their families who are affected by HIV or AIDS. Program activities include rent subsidies and case management supportive services to help clients secure and maintain housing. Supportive services include assistance with health benefits and insurance navigation and enrollment, SUD, mental health services, HIV and STD education, and services that address food insecurity, transportation, employment, education, and housing issues.
San Benito County Health & Human Services	Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS	$150,000	The program provides direct client services such as rental subsidies, nutritional supplementation and dental assistance to low-income San Benito County residents living with HIV/AIDS.
