The City of San José Information Technology Department (ITD) supports the digital transformation and technology systems for the nation’s 12th largest city. Our work makes it easier for residents to connect with services, helps employees do their jobs more efficiently, and supports a more inclusive and innovative community.

Digital Cities and Smart City Innovation 

The Information Technology Department plays a key role in San José’s Smart City efforts.  

The City believes in using digital tools to promote a transparent, data-driven culture focused on innovation and customer service. The IT Department designs technology solutions around the needs of San José residents, ensuring accessibility and privacy remain top priorities. We focus on equity, making sure that every community benefits from new technology. We welcome partnerships that accelerate progress, and we embrace experimentation learning from what works and improving along the way. By listening to our community and empowering City employees, San José aims to deliver smart, reliable services that improve quality of life for all.  

To make this vision a reality, San José is building a culture of transparency and continuous improvement. We empower City staff by investing in training and modern tools that make their work more efficient and impactful. Our departments are developing and using performance dashboards to measure progress and keep the public informed. We are streamlining partnerships with the private sector, foundations, and universities to bring innovation into City operations. Oversight and guidance come from our dedicated Mayor, City Council, and City Manager's Office, ensuring every project stays aligned with community goals and delivers measurable benefits. 

Safe City 

 

We use technology to help make San José the safest big city in the country: 

  • Use analytics to target fire prevention, reduce crime, and guide code enforcement 

  • Apply machine learning to improve traffic safety at dangerous intersections 

  • Increase transparency with crime data and predictive tools 

 

Inclusive City 

 

We work to ensure every resident can benefit from technology: 

  • Expand access to free or low-cost high-speed internet 

  • Support digital skills training at libraries and in workforce programs 

  • Use mobile tools to support housing access and homelessness services 

  • Help attract investments to underserved business districts with data tools 

 

User-Friendly City 

 

We design services around the people who use them: 

  • Build dashboards and tools for residents to report and solve local issues 

  • Support participatory budgeting and digital engagement platforms 

  • Improve open data access and interagency collaboration 

  • Modernize internal systems for faster, better customer service 

 

Sustainable City 

 

We help address climate change with smart infrastructure: 

  • Support energy and water efficiency with data-driven tools 

  • Deploy sensors and apps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 

  • Use benchmarking data to highlight environmental performance

We position San José as a hub for innovation: 

  • Test autonomous vehicles and smart transportation
