Adopt a Storm Drain
The Adopt-a-Storm Drain pilot program is a initiative launched by Councilmember Rosemary Kamei. The program invites individuals and groups in District 1 to play an active role in protecting the environment by keeping storm drains clear. These drains play a critical role in managing rainwater and preventing flooding, but accumulated leaves, trash, and other debris prevent them from working effectively. Removing trash also prevents pollutants from entering our creeks and streams, which flow into the San Francisco Bay.
What does it mean to adopt a storm drain?
By adopting a drain, you're committing to keeping it clean and clear. Plus, you can even give it a fun name! Volunteers will receive training on maintenance techniques, and participate in our clean up activities.
Exciting News: Adopt-a-Storm Drain Program Expands Citywide on Earth Day 2025
The Adopt-a-Storm Drain program, launched in San José's District 1, is expanding Citywide and will be featured on the Environmental Services Department’s website. Starting Earth Day, we invited all San José residents, businesses, schools, and community groups to check the new webpage for a map of storm drains available for adoption. By committing to clean a local drain regularly, participants help prevent flooding, reduce pollution, and enhance our neighborhoods. A new webpage with a sign-up form and a map of available drain has been posted on Earth Day, April 22, 2025.
