Beginning July 1, 2026, the City of San José is reducing irrigation in select non-functional turf areas in parks to meet the requirements of California Assembly Bill 1572 and support long-term water conservation.

What is Changing?

Only turf areas that are not regularly used for recreation or community activities are included in this effort. Sports fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, and other high-use park spaces will continue to be maintained and irrigated.

Why Are we Doing This?

This initiative helps San José:

• Comply with California AB 1572 by January 1, 2027.
• Conserve valuable drinking water.
• Reduce irrigation costs and support a more sustainable park system.

What's Next?

Over time, some of these areas will be converted to mulch, while others will become native gardens, tree-filled spaces, or meadows that save water and support local wildlife.
