Tree Permits
Please dial 3-1-1 to report any roadway hazards such as: sewer back-ups, storm flooding, missing/damaged traffic signs, malfunctioning traffic signals, and broken tree limbs.
According to San José Municipal Code Section 13.28, the owner of any property that is adjacent to a street is responsible for the care and maintenance of any tree, shrub, hedge or landscape within the public right of way at the property owner’s expense.
Goal
Permits are required to ensure that street trees are planted and pruned correctly according to established professional standards.
Fees
Street tree permits are free! Property owners are required to obtain a permit prior to any street tree pruning, removal or planting.
Financial assistance is available for City required work at owner-occupied, single-family residences. Email treesandsidewalks@sanjoseca.gov or call 408-794-1901 to request an application to apply for assistance.
