U.S. 101 Mabury-Berryessa-Oakland Road Corridor Project
Project Description
The City of San José, in partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), proposes the Mabury-Berryessa-Oakland Road Corridor Project. The project is located along U.S. 101 between the I-880 and McKee Road interchanges. The City will be developing environmental review documents to examine a range of alternatives. The public will have an opportunity to learn more about the project and provide input at key stages of development.
The proposed project would:
- Improve mobility and accessibility for all users between U.S. 101, the Berryessa Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, Oakland Road, Berryessa Road, and Mabury Road.
- Improve local road access to U.S. 101.
- Enhance bicycle and pedestrian accessibility and connectivity.
The proposed project would address the following issues:
- Lack of direct access to the Berryessa BART Station causes local drivers to use indirect routes to access U.S. 101. Drivers currently use local streets to access Berryessa Road or Mabury Road.
- Consistent with the City’s adopted land use plans, developments that are planned to be built in the project area will likely require infrastructure improvements. These improvements would support future growth. For example, sites of the San José Flea Market and the Berryessa Urban Village will receive infrastructure improvements.
- There are gaps in the existing bike network in the project area, including where Oakland Road crosses U.S. 101. In addition, the existing bike lanes along Oakland Road, Berryessa Road, and McKee Road are considered “high stress” facilities. These unprotected bike lanes may discourage bike ridership. The City’s five-year investment strategy includes protected bike lanes along Oakland Road and McKee Road to reduce stress and promote ridership.
- Pedestrian facilities at several interchanges are not Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. Sidewalks are discontinuous in some locations and lack painted crosswalks. Pedestrians also need to cross wide streets.
