School Safety Program

Launched in 2022, the School Safety Program is designed to enhance traffic safety around schools throughout the City of San José using multiple approaches. The program’s main goal is to create safer, more welcoming environments for students, school staff, families, and the surrounding community.

The program focuses on practical improvements, like easing traffic flow during busy drop-off and pick-up times, making crosswalks and signage more visible, and finding ways to better protect both pedestrians and drivers. These changes help ensure that everyone can move around school areas with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Working Together for Safer Schools

As part of this effort, the team carries out access and circulation studies by visiting schools in person. During these visits, they observe how traffic moves, where students and families walk or bike, and other factors that influence safety. They also connect closely with school staff, parents, and community members to listen, learn, and gather valuable feedback.

The goal is simple but meaningful: to reduce traffic congestion, improve pedestrian safety for students walking to and from school, and encourage safe, respectful driving in school zones. By working together, we can help make school areas safer and more supportive for everyone.
