Current Volunteer Opportunities

* The City of San Jose has implemented safety precautions in response to COVID- 19.  For this reason the San Jose Animal Care Center will be CLOSED until further notice. We are NOT able to have volunteers working on-site at our facility right now. However, we are still accepting volunteers for our kitten foster program. Please check back for updates.  Thank you for your understanding. 

Can I volunteer for more than one role? Unfortunately the answer is no. Please apply only to one role that you are most interested and experienced.

Working With Animals 

Special Requirements:

  • Previous animal experience required.
  • You must already be confident, comfortable and capable of independently interacting with animals properly and safely.
  • You must have a strong understanding of animal body language.
  • You must be able to bend, crouch and kneel to ensure safe access to kennel entrances. 

Applicants should expect 4-10 hours of training total. This involves instruction shelter procedures and how to work with our adoptable animals. Applicants must pass written and practical exams. Training for dog and cat volunteer roles are generally offered monthly. Training for the vet clinic assistant role is generally offered on-demand as needed.

 Kittens

Over 5500 kittens are brought to our shelter every year.   Many of them are just days old and too young to survive in a shelter environment.  Our animal shelter's 2Tiny Kitten Village is a dedicated shelter space where community pet lovers like yourself can come and help us care for all these babies while they wait for rescue. Sign-up to:

Small Animals

Role Description: Exercise, handle and provide human interaction for rabbits, rats, mice, gerbils and guinea pigs. More

Vet Clinic Assistant
Animal experience required. Main tasks include assisting with anesthesia, prep, and recovery of surgery patients. Also includes instrument cleaning and preparation, cleaning and restocking, and computer data entry. Volunteers are required to attend their assigned their 4-hour weekday shift. After your application is submitted, you will be contacted when openings are available.        * There is no volunteer supplies fee for this position.

Animal Welfare Assistant
Provides support to the shelter by caring for animals. Helps feed and care, and provide daily enrichment for impounded animals, cleans and disinfects shelter facilities, enclosures, equipment, and performs other related duties as required. Volunteers rotate working with dogs, cats and small animals. This opportunity offers some hands on experience for individuals interested exploring opportunities with animal shelters, veterinary clinics, daycare and boarding facilities. Volunteers who complete all rotations in a satisfactory manner will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.
