Special Events Guidelines
The SJFD Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) conducts fire and life safety inspections for all permitted special event activities in the City of San José. Our goal is to provide the community with a cost-effective way to ensure all permitted activities comply with all applicable fire codes and standards. BFP supports increasing public awareness and participation in a fire- and hazard-safe environment. Before scheduling your event, please consult the Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) and Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) if you plan on having an outdoor event.
The following activities require a Special Events Application to be submitted 30 days prior to the event:
- Carnivals, fairs and festivals
- Tents, canopies, and temporary membrane structures
- Pyrotechnic displays or special effects
- Fire watch
- Open burning
- Candle or open flames in the assembly area
What to Review Prior to Submitting Your Application
Prior to submitting your Special Events Application, please review the fire code requirements that may apply to your event. If you are planning an outdoor carnival, fair or festival, review the regulations for cooking booth locations, propane cylinders, fire department access, and public safety plan guidelines.
Once you have completed all appropriate documents for your event, email your submission packet to SJFD.firstname.lastname@example.org or fax it to 408-292-6067. Please include accurate contact information for your event's coordinator.
