In an effort to further streamline City plan review processes, as of August 1, 2017 the Plumbing Review Section of the Building Division is now conducting Wastewater Plan Checks for all food facility projects located in San José as part of the Building Permit plan review process. Environmental Services Department staff will continue to review projects for non-food facilities such as industrial wastewater discharges. Non-food facilities should contact the Environmental Services Department at (408) 945-3000.
A Wastewater Plan Check is a review of the construction plans for building remodels, tenant improvements, new construction, and/or for changes in cooking/menus of existing food facilities by a Building plan reviewer to ensure proper disposal of wastewater to the sanitary sewer. This review is to ensure wastewater grease removal requirements, if any, are provided by the following adequately-sized and maintained grease pretreatment devices, compliant per the California Plumbing Code, and as required by the Building Department and Municipal Code, prior to plan approval or permit issuance:
- Hydro-mechanical Grease Traps
- Gravity Grease Interceptors
- Power-Operated Grease Removal Devices
