The population of the City of San José is estimated by the California Department of Finance (DOF) to have grown by 9,754 persons or 0.9% in calendar year 2016, from 1,036,325 persons on January 1, 2016 to 1,046,079 persons on January 1, 2017. This increase maintains San José's position as the third largest City in California (behind Los Angeles and San Diego, respectively) and the nation's 10th largest city.
In recent years, San José's population growth has been influenced by the annexation of several large unincorporated county pockets. Typically, however, the primary driver of population growth in San José has been the construction of new housing. For example, building permits were issued for approximately 2,750 dwelling units per year over the 2000-2010 time period. The City's total housing stock is estimated at 332,574 units on January 1, 2017.
