San José Municipal Water System

San José Municipal Water System (Muni Water) is owned and operated by the City of San José. It is one of three drinking water suppliers in San José, along with privately-owned San Jose Water Company and Great Oaks Water Company.

Look up your water retailer.

Muni Water has grown from a relatively small water utility to the fourth largest water retailer in Santa Clara County. Today, we offer some of the lowest water rates in the San Francisco Bay Area while providing our customers with a safe and reliable water supply.

San José Municipal Water System recommends that customers continue to use and drink tap water as usual. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the, “presence of the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies and based on current evidence the risk to water supplies is low.” The City of San José is working closely with local and state health departments to ensure the safety of our community.

Reopening Buildings After Prolonged Shutdown or Reduced Operation

As COVID-19 restrictions are adjusted and buildings begin to reopen, staff who operate and maintain building water systems should be aware of potential water quality issues linked to a water shutdown or reduced water usage. Threats to water quality include stagnation, depressurization, loss of disinfectant residual, leaching of metals, and growth of harmful bacteria or microorganisms such as Legionella.

Although each building is different, the City of San Jose encourages its customers to thoroughly flush its onsite and internal water system to ensure water quality is restored to pre-stagnation conditions. Flushing guidance documents can be found here:
